Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists by Mikki Kendall and A. d’Amico

Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists by Mikki Kendall and A. d’Amico is amazing. | Dress | Red Heels | Purse | Watch | Necklace | Earrings | Red Lipstick

I have always had a thing for historical women. My entire childhood and adolescence was spent searching for the women in history who did more than marry and have babies – there is nothing wrong with either/both of those things. I wanted to see women in power, women creating history, women doing the things only men were allowed to do. My love of history and research was born 21 years ago when I found Queen Elizabeth I because she inspired me to reach for more. I wish Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists by Mikki Kendall and A. d’Amico had existed for childhood me because I would have loved it. It’s a compilation of women throughout history and across cultures, documenting the struggles and successes they faced.

There is so much to talk about in this graphic history, but I’ll keep to the highlights.

The narrative is set up in a really interesting way. I don’t know what other graphic novels/histories look like, so my perception of how the narrative looks in comparison to others might be completely off. There’s a class of girls (middle or high school) at school, and their teacher is AI. The girls are all different colors and cultures. The teacher takes them through women’s history starting in Sumer 3000 BCE and leads them through history around the world, recounting stories of remarkable women and cultural norms. Throughout the book, the girls ask questions, make statements, and share opinions. Sometimes there are comments marked by prejudice, which allow the girls to confront those [ill founded] opinions and resolve them. It’s such a powerful way of depicting the multitude of ways women can oppress and harm one another due to differences in education, culture, religion, race, and more. The teacher often answers the questions or tells them to wait for the answer because it will come.

Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists is filled with fabulous quotes. So often they are marked with emotion, like exasperation, “So Roman rule came with the “gift” of patriarchy. Great.” Or the fact women might not have had as much limelight, rights, power, or many other things, there is the moment when their historical power was acknowledged, “There is never a moment in history in any culture where women weren’t a major force.”

History has almost always been told by, interpreted by, seen through the eyes of men. Women have been systemically oppressed for millennia on the basis of religion, thought, and philosophy, all which were dominated by men. The book points out how manuscripts were often altered or interpreted differently throughout history, which had an impact on women’s lives, and are still echoed in today’s cultures and treatments of women. Men used their power to keep their power, “Before Irene, no woman had ruled any part of the Holy Roman Empire alone. The pope counted her throne as empty and crowned Charlemagne.”

No topic is off limits. With ferocity and fearlessness Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists tackle sex, religion, slavery, education, and everything in between. The authors aren’t afraid to destroy preconceived notions instilled in us by our education systems. Abolitionists weren’t all great. They wanted the vote for women, white women. Susan B. Anthony was against black women having the right to vote. Feminism also comes under focus, especially in regards to gender, sexuality, and race. Feminism has historically only been open to white women. Black women and other women of color were excluded. I love the very intersectional approach to history and feminism. One of my favorite quotes and a motto (in various words) I have been living by for over a decade: “There’s nothing feminist about excluding people.”

Kendall and d’Amico sum up women’s history and rights in the quote, “The history of women’s rights isn’t linear. It’s complicated and different cultures had different norms.” Time may be linear, but our history, our rights, our existence has not been linear. We often took large steps forward just to be pushed back.

This graphic history is fun and colorful and educational, but it is a sweeping history of women around the world and the devastation they have faced throughout human existence. As a woman, I suggest it to everyone. It’s feminist and beautifully done, but it approaches really hard topics with kindness. I can’t help but love this book. It’s an amazing place to start for girls wanting to know about their history. I wish I had had this as a young girl, but I have it now!

Fun Fact The world’s oldest continually operating educational institution is still open was founded by a woman in Fez, Morocco. (The University of Al Quaraouiyine) I hope to visit it one day.

Memorable Quotes
“Welcome to the history you clearly never learned.”
“Sometimes rulers meant ‘over my dead body’s literally.”
“Your world is as big as you make it.” Georgia Douglas Johnson
“As always, women led the way in America and abroad.”
“You know that women are always looked upon as nothing; but we are your mothers; you are our sons.”

11… Of My Home For A Midwestern Holidays Activities

I went home for the holidays. Home is such a vague word because I consider home to be Houston and wherever my people are. Other than that, I was in Minnesota, Chicago, and Iowa. I got to spend time with most of the people that matter most to me in this world.

  1. Three long road trips to Chicago to Ames to home [Houston] with my favorite man and being, aka my life pawtner aka my boyfriend and my dog.

Stopping at the World’s Largest Truck Stop in Davenport, Iowa. | Crop Sherpa Jacket | Yogas | Red Wellies | Stud Earrings | Glasses |
  2. I played with horses in Minnesota. Alex’s mom has a horse farm in the middle of nowhere Minnesota, and it’s one of my favorite places on Earth. The farm is surrounded by bluffs, and it’s just beautiful. I was only there for two days, but it was a great way to start my holiday trip.

I love horsie cuddles!!! | Wool Skirt | Sweater | Stud Earrings |
  3. Had a family Christmas in Effingham, where Mom and Dad are building their retirement lake home. While Mom was showing us the sight, we got the car stuck. None of us wore the right shoes, but we pushed anyways and made it back onto the road. Girl Power.

    wp-1578345342793
We were all visibly thrilled about the situation.
  4. I dressed up with my sisters and Beau on Christmas morning to be Santa and her elves because we don’t require Santa to be a man in our family. I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything as cute as Beau in a Santa costume. Made my entire year.

Elf Pajamas | Elf Hats | Santa Costume
  5. One of my Christmas presents was two tickets to The Second City for their Do You Believe in Madness? Show, critiquing the modern political climate and culture in general. Kelsey and I went and had an AMAZING time. I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed that much in a two hour period. (I probably have, but it was at myself, so it doesn’t count.) We had front row seats, and they served hot chocolate. I mean, it was made for me.

Enjoying Chicago. | OTK Boots | Coat | Hat | Purse | Scarf
  6. I got to spend the evening with my brother and sister-in-law in Chicago, enjoying good food, yummy chocolates, and even better company.

Two of my favorite people!!! | Jeans | OTK Boots | Sweater | Scarf | Earrings |
  7. Beau got bit by my parents’ new rescue dog. Stay tuned for more on this week’s Blog + Dog for more details. She’s fine, but it was ruff.
  8. I did some unnecessary shopping in downtown Ames with my mom, pawtner, and dad. I picked up very important things, like popover tins, tea, soap that smells like hot chocolate, and dog treats/toys/chewbones. Beau appreciates the fact we spend more money on her than ourselves.
  9. I took pictures in the Iowa Law Library. There will be a post about that in the future. It’s amazing. If you ever have the chance to go, do so. You won’t regret it.

Honestly, one of the most beautiful places ever. | Skirt | Sweater | Heels |
  10. The family went to the Iowa State Capitol Building and East Village in Des Moines to explore and have a fun afternoon on New Year’s Eve. I had never been with my dad, and my mom hadn’t been in two decades – since I went on a second grade field trip.

  11. I dressed up as a flapper for New Year’s Eve, took pictures in Beardshear Hall on Iowa State’s campus, and attended a concert in a speakeasy. It was a lot of fun. My parents had an amazing time, and Dylan and I got to dance together, which was a nice way to bring in the New Year.

11 Things About Hiking

If you know me, you know I avoid exercise like the plague. I consider hiking pseudo exercise because I don’t avoid it quite like the plague.

  1. I don’t live and have never lived anywhere hiking can be done on a regular basis, so I only hike on vacation. This allows me to maintain the allusion hiking is super duper fun.
  2. You can entice me into a hike for a good picture.
  3. Hiking doesn’t suck when I’m with people I genuinely like. Exercise is unpleasant, so when I hike with people I don’t truly enjoy being with, I want to punch people.
  4. If there’s a waterfall, I will really hike for that.
  5. I’m a big fan of getting where I’m going. This factor is multiplied when I’m hiking. I will stop when I need to. Otherwise, I am a one direction, uphill, mountain climbing machine.
  6. Humidity doesn’t bother me, even when I’m hiking.
  7. There is a very good chance my hike will double in length before I’m done. This usually happens because I accidentally took a wrong turn or decided I’m superwoman and wanted to go farther before remember I’m not.
  8. I always feel like I’ve lost sixteen pounds after hiking.
  9. When hiking with my bestie or boyfriend, I like to be ridiculous by making them wear matching shirts or in a more recent instance cat ears.
  10. My favorite places to go hiking are Steamboat Springs Colorado and my new favorite place Lake Tahoe. They’re super beautiful, full of mountains, and great for picture taking opportunities.
  11. The best compliment I’ve ever received was when I went hiking in Colorado with my boyfriend. I made him hike like there’s no tomorrow. He’s a retired Marine. He said hiking with me is “worse than the Crucible.” Best. Compliment. Ever.

The Travelers by Regina Porter

Worth A Read Definitely
Length 320
Quick Review Starting with a bang, Porter dives into America’s past and complex issues with racism, classism, feminism, and all the other -isms as two families intermingle from the 1950’s to the last years of Obama’s presidency.

Reading The Travelers by Regina Porter in Old Town Spring, Texas. | Dress | Watch

Regina Porter knows how to write. Her skill is on full display from the very beginning of The Travelers. This is an impressive piece of literature in and of itself, but the fact it is her debut makes it even more momentous. Simultaneously concise and epic, Porter packs a punch with every character and plot line. A story that is sure to leave an impression on anyone who picks it up.

With a huge cast of characters, The Travelers does its readers a favor by including a cast and familial context before the intricately woven plot begins. Convenient for reminding myself who’s who in the milieu without having to backtrack, I appreciated it..

Porter dives into the plot and complexities of relationships and humans search for answers with “When the boy was four, he asked his father why people needed sleep. His father said, “So God could unfuck all the things people fuck up.”” Two sentences. A striking way to start a novel that lives up to and surpasses the promise of its first impression. Spanning seven decades, The Travelers explores the realities of living in the United States through a variety of lenses and eras as two families come together.

This is not an easy book to read. It challenges readers to follow along a journey mired by stark realities. As chapters change so does the perspective, characters, era, setting, style, and tone. It’s a chameleon of a novel; changing drastically to fit the characters, situations, and times. There are no good characters or bad. Although, there are a few who fall much further on the wrong side of bad. Flaws and brilliance are present in each character. Instead of relying on tropes, The Travelers snapshots people’s lives to depict the greater faults in American society not just historically but currently.

People are not one thing. They are not just black. Just white. Just gay. Just rich. Just a father. Just an anything. Being human means being many things all at the same time and experiencing events in very unique and personal ways. We walk through life as a culmination of all our identities and experiences commingling simultaneously. Porter does not dilute her characters. They are not just white, mentally ill, black, veteran, sister, mixed, lover, poor, victim, straight, abuser, rich, gay, etc. She allows them to be many things concurrently.

The real triumph in The Travelers is Porter’s resistance to explain. She does not water down her stories or characters or layers by telling the reader how to perceive it. She lets it play out and leaves it. She has a straightforward yet nuanced way of writing. As in life; she allows the reader to infer and interpret what happens outside the line of sight. Readers are used to having a degree of omniscience, but Porter doesn’t allow this.

As a survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence, Porter delivers one of the most believable literary sexual abuse encounters I’ve encountered. I admire her dedication to tackling often misunderstood and misrepresented atrocities with sincerity and tact. It’s a hard line to walk, and she does it well.

This is good Literature. With a capital L. The Iowa Writers’ Workshop has a reputation for excellence. It has earned this reputation because Regina Porter and writers of this caliber called it home for a time. It is an incredible program, and I’m not just saying so because I grew up in Iowa.

The Travelers is one of the most affecting contemporary novels I have encountered.

Happy 4th Birthday, Beau!!!

She wanted the cake like NOW.

Beau could not wait to eat her birthday cake. | Beach Days Hat | Good Vibes Shirt | Jean Shorts

When you rescue a dog, you never really know how old they are or when their birthday is. Beau was about a year and a half when I adopted her, so we decided to choose a day for her birthday because everyone deserves a birthday. May is my birthday month as well as many other people I love dearly. She was most likely born in 2015. I have a thing for numbers with a pattern, so I picked the 15th as her birthday. 5.15.15 is her birthday!

Today is Beau’s fourth birthday! I love celebrating people’s birthdays and that extends to my very favorite breathing entity: my dog.

Yesterday, I snagged a cake from Three Dog Bakery in Rice Village. It’s even customized with her name on it. Beau loves yummies, and Three Dog Bakery makes healthy and dog friendly treats. Peanut butter is a favorite flavor, so that’s what she got in the shape of a bone. I also picked out other dog treats because it’s not a birthday without presents.

Beau and I laid in bed for a good bit this morning getting our cuddle on. She didn’t know what the afternoon would bring, but it was definitely a celebration of her life. She loves the ocean. I love the ocean. We love the ocean. Luckily, Galveston is an hour away. Beau was very nervous as I packed clothes and food and blankets. I even wrangled up birthday balloons in her favorite color. Yes, she has favorite colors: hot pink and teal.

We were at the beach by three. She got to spend the afternoon running after birds, leaping in the waves, and chasing her favorite peoples. I even managed to get a few pictures before she chowed down on her cake. I would lie to you and say she only had a piece, but nah. She ate the whole cake in a matter of moments. I don’t think it even lasted two minutes. By five, Beau was exhausted. We spent another hour and a half just laying in the sun drying off enjoying the last bits of sunlight on her fourth birthday. Honestly, it’s the perfect way to spend a day. She had a blast, and now, she’s laying on my feet snoring. She may not know it’s her birthday, but I hope she felt extra special love today.

I couldn’t be happier to be this girl’s mama. She makes my heart happy and probably makes me a better human being.
