Christmas in London by Anita Hughes at Levy Park in Houston. | Green Dress | Red Heels | Sapphire Necklace | Sapphire Earrings | Fossil Watch | Pearl Bracelets |

Christmas in London by Anita Hughes has a lot of things you want in a Christmas story, but it falls short in just as many ways.

Louisa is a small time pastry chef working in New York City. Kate is a producer for a local cooking show. They spend Christmas in London to be a part of a holiday cooking show. Louisa grows close to an assistant from New York, and Kate revisits people from her past.

I’m fairly ambivalent about this book. It’s not bad. It’s definitely not great, but it’s what people want and expect during the holidays. Loads of ridiculous romantic stuff and drama for no reason. Hughes writes in the third person and switches between Louisa and Kates’s point of views throughout Christmas in London. It’s mostly told in the present, except for when Kate has flashbacks to the past for a muddy subplot. Honestly, the writing is really boring and cliché. There is an abundance of similes. Hughes is overly descriptive to the point of monotony. It became so repetitive when as the narrative said in one way or another “a man showed up and she realized it was Trevor/Noah.” Yuck. It doesn’t build suspense. It’s just boring and a waste of ink.

I could get past the writing if the characters were more believable or even likable. Louisa and her love interest felt like they were in high school more than adults starting out in a romantic relationship. Kate is more mature but not by a lot. I have a hard time identifying with adults in relationships who are completely lacking in mature communication skills. At the same time, their conflict resolution comes far too easily after they’ve bungled the whole situation from poor communication skills. They’re also not very likable. The parallels drawn between Louisa and Kate are not subtle; they’re basically living the same story arc.The male characters are the worst. Honestly, I don’t know why either woman put up with it? No man is better than any man.

Anita Hughes’ Christmas in London is a decent mindless read to keep you busy instead of spending time with the in-laws or family. It’s not great, but it could be a lot worse.

““But there isn’t time to be passionate about more than one thing. If you want something in life, you have to sacrifice everything else to get it.””
“She had never been able to separate love and attraction.”

Holiday Leftover Egg Rolls

wp-1577910881059
These are DELICIOUS!!!

I don’t even know how this became a tradition, but three Thanksgivings ago, we made Holiday Leftover Eggrolls. It sounds really weird, and yet they are delicious. You can make them and eat them immediately or make them ahead of time and freeze them for later.

The only things you’ll need aside from leftovers is egg roll wrappers and vegetable oil. You can find them at pretty much any grocery store, and they’re inexpensive.

Ingredients

  • Egg Roll Wrappers
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Turkey (or Ham)
  • Stuffing
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Gravy

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, heat vegetable oil to the temperature discussed on the egg roll wrapper packaging.
  • In another saucepan, heat gravy and water to make it liquid again.
  • In the middle of the wrapper layer mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and turkey.
  • Fold wrapper like instructed on the package.
  • Once the oil is heated to the required temperature you can put the egg rolls in the oil. Cook for three minutes or until golden brown. Rotate when one side is golden. They will float.
  • You can also wrap them in tin foil and freeze for a later date. They will take a little longer to fry, but you can fry them frozen.
  • When done, place on a plate covered in paper towels. Let cool for one minute.
  • Pour gravy into small bowl.
  • Dip egg rolls in gravy and DEVOUR!!!

They are so easy. I promise you’ll love them.

A Stressed Christmas

I LOVE Christmas. I really love Christmas.

We’re partying it up in our house with beer (or a teacup that says whiskey with Dr. Pepper inside). | Beau’s sweater | Candy Cane Dress | Glasses | Ugly Sweater | PJ Pants | Socks | Santa Bag | Tree | Earrings |

The holidays are literally my happiest time of the year. I spend two months baking, listening to Christmas movies, wrapping presents, buying presents, making sure the house looks and smells festive. I want everyone who walks in the door to be hit in the face with good cheer and cookies. There’s nothing about the Christmas season I don’t love. That I can think of in this moment. It is absolutely enchanting to me, and it always has been.

I’m friends with a lot of parents. Christmas is four days away, and so many of my parenting friends are over it. In a lot of ways, I DON’T GET IT!!! How can anyone not love the best time of year. In other ways, I totally get it. It’s the time of the year, where your house should look like a magazine all the time because friends and family are coming over. It should look and feel like Christmas. Bake some cookies. Clean. Buy a tree. Clean. Buy presents. Clean. Don’t forget any presents for anyone let alone your friend’s parent’s dog. Put up the tree. Decorate. Clean some more. Throw a party. Go to twelve parties. Make sure you have an ugly Christmas sweater. Clean that thing five more times because life happens and things get dirty.

There is more pressure than any other time of year to be the perfect ‘50s family in a perfect Christmas house brimming with gingerbread cookies, eggnog, and candy canes in every nook and cranny they could even be up your butt. If you don’t know what I’m talking about: turn on the Hallmark channel for fifteen seconds. That’s it. Be that. Anything less than 127.9% happy at all times is not happy enough. If you can’t step in for seventeen of Santa’s elves, You.Are.Failing.Christmas. This is just if you’re breathing. If you’re breathing with kids, the bar is set higher. You have to make Christmas magic for the children and everyone else.

I hate decorating, but I love when my home is decorated, so I suck it up for one day and get it done. Other than that, I love all the things about Christmas because I love having a showroom perfect house (totally anal retentive and OCD); I love listening to nothing but classic Christmas music; any excuse to bake is a good one in my book; I love showering people with presents; I love throwing parties and making sure everyone is 128% happy; I love having an excuse to radiate happiness and wish people well. I am a raging feminist. I am also very much of a Suzy Homemaker in so many ways. I love the Christmas season because it gives me an excuse to go full-RaeAnna on EVERYONE, and no one will think it’s weird for these two months. Christmas epitomizes me as a person, so it makes sense I love it.

Not everyone does. That’s okay!!! I can only imagine how exhausting all of this would be to someone who is not so inclined. I can’t imagine the pressure parents feel to make Christmas perfect. So I’m going to do Christmas my way. I hope you do Christmas your way!!!!

Dylan and I decided to channel “So Over It” by stressed parents on Christmas Eve after the kids have FINALLY gone to sleep waiting for Santa for our Ugly Sweater picture. Even Beau got in on the fun with her ugly sweater. Mine’s not a sweater, but it’s a pretty atrocious dress.

Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Worth A Read Maybe
Length 448
Quick Review Becky is back to her shopaholic ways, and it’s Christmas time when everyone is a bit of a shopaholic.

How my face would be if I had to shop being followed by paparazzi. | Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella | Sparkle Booties | Purple Satin Skirt | Sweater | Scarf | Earrings | Glasses |

I haven’t read any of the other Shopaholic books by Kinsella, so this was my introduction into Rebecca Brandon née Bloomwood. Honestly, I can’t tell if Kinsella has created a series to critique the consumerism of today’s capitalist society or if she’s creating a hardcore shopping fantasy incarnate in Becky for women to live through. Both? I have my preference. Anyways… Christmas Shopaholic is the newest installment in the series.

Rebecca Brandon née Bloomwood is married to Luke. They have a young daughter Minnie and live outside of London near her parents. Becky works in her best friend’s shop. Luke does financial stuff. I won’t get into the plot because it’s very well done. Kinsella manages to throw a ton of subplots together in a way that truly mimics the complexities of life. Although, I’m not sure the characters are as believable.

Being up front and honest here. Rebecca, Becks, Becky – whatever she goes by – would irritate the ever living crap out of me. After reading Christmas Shopaholic, I don’t think I can read any more of these books. The title says it all; Becky is a true shopaholic. I don’t mean she likes to shop, I mean it’s a condition. She should see a therapist. I found her to be completely delusional about everything. She truly isn’t a bad person. She has good intentions. She’s just an idiot in many ways. She makes me cringe in just about every social situation. I also don’t know why she always has to introduce herself to everyone as Rebecca Brandon née Bloomwood. Is it a way to show she’s a feminist? Does she really like her maiden name? Is she trying to sound continental? I DON’T KNOW.

Another baffling thing is the marriage between Becky and Luke. I don’t know how her husband puts up with any of it. It seems like a really odd pairing anyways. A man who is very good with money and business married to a woman who finds an excuse to buy literally anything. When there isn’t something to buy, she comes up with a reason to buy something. The two together seem like a recipe for divorce and not at all an opposites attract situation. I kept wondering what Minnie, their daughter, would grow up to be like.

That being said… There were tons of really great moments. Kinsella makes poignant observations about sexism, classicism, family, holidays, consumerism, and more. I don’t think I can read any more of the Shopaholic series because Becky is not my cup of tea. I do think there are some really great parts about Christmas Shopaholic that override my disdain for the character. It’s a good book to curl up with and enjoy cookies this Christmas.

Memorable Quotes
Online ordering isn’t really shopping, it’s “procuring.” You procure stuff online. You don’t get the buzz of actually stepping into a shop and seeing all the gorgeous stuff, feeling it, stroking it, being seduced by it.”
“Whatever the Grinch can steal, that’s not Christmas.”

Family Christmas Picture

Merry Christmas!!! And Happy Blog + Dog!!!

DSC_0093
Our Crazy Car Family Christmas Picture!!! | Santa Shirts | RaeAnna’s PJ Pants | Dylan’s PJ Pants | Dog Sweater | Santa Sack | Cookie Jar | Car Mug | Dog Mug | Car Wrapping Paper | Tree Skirt | Stockings | Tree | Blanket |

Last year, our family picture included a lot of buffalo plaid.
This year, we went with a car theme.

Random? Nope! Fun fact, we’re a car family. Not just a car family taking trips to car shows here and there. We are a crazy car family. Maybe not the craziest car family, but we’re up there, for sure.

I realized very quickly after meeting Dylan, cars are a big deal for him. After only four months of dating, we moved from Chicago to Houston… TOGETHER!!! (Hindsight, that could have been a horrible, terrible, no good idea. Over three years later, it’s turned out alright.) We moved to Houston because Dylan started going to school at SAMTech: School of Automotive Machinists and Technology. aka: Making Fast Cars Go Fast School For Car Nerds.

I grew up with a dad for a mechanic. We would go to car shows, and he would teach me about engines, history, and car fun facts. I’ve managed to retain a good bit of information. I wouldn’t be able to build you an engine, but I’m not half bad at troubleshooting or changing a tire. I’ll pay people to change my oil because it’s easier and I can.

Anyways. Dylan is a crazy car guy. He loves them. Two years ago, he brought a small block home to build. (It’s been sitting in the closet until I pulled it out for this picture.) For some reason, we have a racing slick [tire] on our patio. (It’s been there for just as long, but got drug into the house for me to sit on.) There are always car parts appearing and disappearing from my kitchen table. We bought a race car this year. He’s building the engine block and all the other fun stuff under the hood. He loves cars, and I support his dreams to build, design, and race them.

Cars are a huge part of our life. It’s his passion and his career; it only made sense to bring the race car theme of our lives into our Christmas card. We have red truck wrapping paper, a Santa bag with a red truck (and a dog) on it, a red truck cookie jar, red truck coffee mug (I used a Christmas puppy mug because dogs are my passion), an engine block, a racing slick, car ornaments, a red truck puppy sweater, and matching Santa in red truck pajamas. I think we nailed the theme. Now we just need a red truck. Hey, Dylan! Want to paint yours???
