No. Thank you. Stop. I don’t like it.
20190102_152813-02.jpeg
Oh! Treats. I’ll sniff.

I said, “I. Don’t. Like.”
20190102_152642(0)-03.jpeg
I don’t like the rain. I don’t like the hat. The treats are hardly worth this.

Anytime now. We can take the picture.

Food?
20190102_152552-02.jpeg
This is not worth it.

Is this a good enough pose? I look stupid. Is my expression conveying that?

Why did the dog cross the road? To get away from you.

Won’t you leave me along, devil woman?!?
20190102_152410-02.jpeg
You. This. Is. Exhausting.

I am being followed.

There. We look good. Here’s my sweater | My hat/leg warmers | Mom’s hat | Mom’s Sweater | Mom’s scarf | Mom’s jeans | Mom’s boots | I’m done.

Beau and I wish you a Happy New Year!!! I can’t believe it’s 2019 already. Holy wowza!

We spent our New Year’s Eve with family in the Chicago area. A very low key night surrounded by the people we love most. My 63 pound dog was miniaturized by her 170-ish pound Great Dane cousin, Dexter. They snuggled on the couch along with a tiny, old girl, Ana, and three cats. It’s a big couch, but four people, three dogs (totalling 200+ pounds), and three cats is cozy. We celebrated with food and an Avengers movie marathon. We know how to party hard.

We said our goodbyes to family and friends in Chicago yesterday. My grandparents live directly on the way from Chicago to Texas, so we stopped in for lunch. Then, we were convinced to stay for a few days. Working from home, I can do this.

I visit my grandparents in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas often. I haven’t been since the end of May. One of the first things Grammy said when I walked in the door, “I was wondering what happened! You’ve been gone sooooo long.” For awhile, I was here almost every month. After the I love you and I missed you’s were exchanged. “You’re staying the night.” Then my grandpa, aka Poppy Walt, wanted to take us out to dinner. And Grammy said, “No, they’re staying a few days. She has nowhere to be.” I guess I’m staying for a few days. Not that I or Beau are complaining. They live in a gated golfing community, and their backyard overlooks a fairway, a lake, and some mountains. REAL shit hole, I tell you.

Since we drove over night, Beau was cozy in her backseat blanket cuddle puddle for nine and a half hours. When we arrived, she was so happy; she loves it here. There is so much space to run around in their woodsy backyard, and the big house has lots of sniffs to find. The rain dampened her high spirits, but life isn’t perfect.

I couldn’t resist taking these cute pictures. I found her sweater, hat, and leg warmers at Target. She HATES the hat. I won’t lie: she is not a fan. At least, she hasn’t transferred her hat hatred to me as the hat-putter-onner. She really likes the sweater though. It’s warm and snug. The leg warmers helped her bear the rain, surprisingly. I’m still in a festive holiday mood, so I donned one of my go-to red sweaters, my favorite red scarf (budget version here), and a white hat. I also live in my grey Aldo boots, and these jeans. Seriously, these boots are the best. For otk boots, these are an incredible deal! Beau is for sure the cuter of the two. Although, she got her beauty sleep… I drove through the night.

Not a bad start to 2019. Rang in the New Year together in Chicago. Day 2 and 3 will be in Arkansas. Day 4 will be home to Houston. Ruff life. We’ll see where else 2019 takes us on our travels!!!

Caledonia, Minnesota

Caledonia, Minnesota is a small town in the southeastern part of the state. It’s almost as close as you can get to Wisconsin without actually being in Wisconsin. It’s the county seat of Houston County, so there’s a courthouse alongside all the other small town amenities. There are a few bars, a bakery, a couple restaurants, a grocery store, a coffee shop, and a few other things, but it’s not much more than a hiccup of a town.

Why, oh, why am I writing about Caledonia?

About eight years ago, my partner in crime, Alex, took me to meet his family in Caledonia, Minnesota. I was there often during college because it was only a few hours away. After college, it’s become a lot less common since he lives in North Carolina and I in Houston. This is the first time I’ve been back in a year.

My two favorite places in town are the cafe and the bakery. The bakery is open in the morning and serves yummy donuts, pastries, and cookies. The Wired Rooster is an adorable cafe in the middle of downtown. I had to buy one of the mugs because they’re cute/I have a mug addiction. The cafe is a fairly recent addition to the town landscape, but it is very cozy – especially now in the winter with the snow on the ground.

I have a turkey cookie!!!

I’m here for a little over a week and a half. It’s a calm and understated several days. It’s a nice break from the normal busy-busy-busy of my life at home.

Caledonia is a blip on a map, but it holds so many wonderful memories and feelings for me. It’s a place where I have no reception, so everything and everyone else fades into the other. The people are friendly and passionate about the Vikings. It is football season, you know. Everything closes early except the bar. It’s like many small towns. But this one is special. It’s the home of my person.

Hot Air Balloon Rodeo

DSC_0475_1-01.jpeg

I was very sad because I thought I had missed the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. With the help of Google, I did a little researching to find out I had, in fact, not missed it because it was being held on both Saturday and Sunday. I guarantee you this is one of two reasons I will get excited about getting up at 4:30 in the morning. Hot air balloons or travel. In this case, I was getting up for both, technically.

I set my alarm for 4:30 on a Sunday morning. Somehow, I managed to get out of bed, put my hair in a messy bun, throw clothes on my body, wake up my Partner-in-Crime, and convince him to get out of bed. I did it. We, in various degrees of sleepy-grumpiness, found our way down the mountain to the shuttle. Everyone was shuttled to the launch site on Steamboat Springs’ buses. They were all very lovely and almost too chipper for a Sunday morning at the butt-crack of dawn. It was a five-ish minute bus ride to the lake, where the hot air balloons would be launched.

DSC_0347_3-01.jpeg

I can’t really describe how amazing the view was. At the bottom of a mountain is the lake. On one side of the lake, all the balloons and vendor tents were set up. It was cold. Well, not cold. It was chilly for a mid-July morning. I was in jeans and flannel. I found coffee and donuts because I needed sustenance and something to keep my hands warm. The grass was wet. My feet were a bit numb after a whole thirty seconds.

We trudged around to the far side of the lake. It was less crowded, and I could watch the balloons from a distance. The lake was so perfectly still. The sky, clouds, mountains, and balloons reflected off the lake’s surface. It was absolutely amazing. I took so many pictures. Well over a thousand. I can’t really describe how amazing it truly is.

The Hot Air Balloon Rodeo is an annual tradition in Steamboat. People come from all over to participate and watch the spectacle. The hot air balloons launch between 6:00 and 9:00 in the morning. If you get there early, you can chat with the captains, pilots, I don’t know what they’re called. One of the local organizations sets up a stand with donuts, coffee, and breakfast burritos. When the balloons launch, they try to dip their baskets into the water. It’s fun and, I’m sure, harder than it looks. Unfortunately, it creates ripples in the water causing the reflections to be less crisp. Oh well. There are tons and tons of balloons of all colors and sizes. There’s a “tiny” balloon, and the pilot(?) doesn’t even have a basket; he just straps himself into a chair dangling from the balloon. I love the colorful ones. Remax had a balloon present. There were even some balloons with murals including clowns, creepy, and a western motif.

I love balloons. As a little girl visiting my grandparents’ condo in Colorado, the balloons would come over the mountains sometimes. They were incredible. I have always, always loved them. I get giddy about balloons. This was an absolute wonderful experience. I would love to keep going back for it.

Lyon’s Corner Drug & Soda Fountain

dsc_0027-01.jpeg

I am obsessed with Lyon’s Corner Drug & Soda Fountain. I have been going for as long as I can remember. There are trips to Steamboat Springs, and all I remember is begging my mom to take me to the soda fountain. I discovered phosphates here.

Lyon’s is a fully functioning drug store located on Lincoln Avenue in downtown. With a pharmacy and other drug store necessities, it also sells beautiful cards, crafts, and home goods. I made use of the drug store part to get some first aid items because I actually ripped my toenail off at Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Ouch!

DSC_0046-02.jpeg

The Soda Fountain is towards the back on the left side of the store. The floor is black and white tile. The stools are red. There’s a jukebox. Honestly, it’s as straight out of the 1950’s as I have found yet. They have food, but most people come for the ice cream in the summer. A kid cone is only $1, so you have no excuse! I love the phosphates, which if you don’t know what they are, they’re also known as Italian sodas in coffee shops. Fizzy, flavored yumminess. I suggest blackberry.

I am not lying when I say, I went every day I was in Steamboat. The workers behind the counter actually learned my name.

San Diego Beaches

I meant to post as I was on vacation… Time ran away with me, and I ended up reading far less than I meant to.

I was really feeling myself on the beach at Coronado. It’s a beautiful beach with a view of the ocean and Point Loma. The sand has flecks of gold in it; well, I don’t know if it’s gold, but it seems like it’s gold.

I have loved Coronado since I was little. My parents brought me here when I was very young. I went back by myself at nineteen, which is when I really fell in love with the island. I visited several times during college for vacation. I love staying on Coronado because it is bustling during the day quieting down a lot after dark. You don’t even need a car once you’re there because everything is so close by. The food is great. There are tons of super fancy hotels to choose from. I highly suggest Coronado as a place to stay for a weekend or a month, if you can afford it. I have read many books by the beach here. Also the houses are amazing, so I suggest walking around just to look at the beautiful houses, gardens, and gates.

Due to traveling with my beautiful boxer-mix Beauvoir, Beau for short, I ended up at more dog beaches than people beaches. And by more I actually mean: I only went the the beach once without her. She was a sandy mess, but so worth the exhaustion it brought on!

San Diego is so incredibly dog friendly. Almost every beach in the area has a section that is dog friendly. My favorite dog beaches being: Coronado Dog beach, Ocean Beach dog beach, Fiesta Island dog beach, and Del Mar. All of which are super dog friendly! It’s amazing. Although, it’s not an ideal place to read! Lots of barking. Lots of running around. Lots of fun for everyone but the books! Coronado Dog Beach is West from the Hotel Del Coronado and bumps up against the Naval Base on the island. Ocean Beach Dog Beach is a few blocks away from the main drag in Ocean Beach. Beau really enjoyed this beach because there is an area more inland with very few waves. Beau is scared of waves, so this was a winner for us. The whole neighborhood is extremely dog friendly. There are awesome cliffs to climb next to the pier. Fiesta Island has a reputation for being one of the best dog beaches in the country; it’s gorgeous. Del Mar is North of San Diego. It’s a really beautiful dog beach, but the downside is that dogs have to be leashed during the summer. Beau was a bit upset by this. She couldn’t run around and be her normally social self at this dog beach, but she ended up having a good time anyways.

I had a great time hanging out at the beaches in San Diego. They are some of my favorite, but the ocean is chilly. Be prepared!

One of the best doughnut shops in the country (no exaggeration), is in downtown San Diego. Donut Bar has amazingly creative concoctions and yummy coffee too. I didn’t want to eat in downtown, so the donuts and I went to the beach with Beau! Before leaving, one of the employees brought a treat out for my dog. “No dog left behind.”

Anyways, I enjoyed a book, donuts, and coffee on the beach at Coronado. It was a rough way to spend the day!
