The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay is probably one of my least favorite books I've read in recent years. It's not good. I hate it even though my best friend loves it.
Davis had a nice novel until the last five pages when she throws a it in the toilet. The ending comes quickly and suddenly. It’s as if her editor asked her to wrap everything up with a nice bow. It was saccharine and a little vomit inducing how spoonfed the ending was. Otherwise, it's a nice story combining a mystery with a touch of love and a lot of independent women searching for belonging.Â
I have too many good things to say about this novel for a soundbite. Absolutely affecting in every way.
The Farm by Joanne Ramos is heartbreaking and infuriating. She has quite a literary career ahead of her if this is what she brings to the table with her debut novel.
There are good things and bad things about Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I liked the story quite a bit, but the characters and the storytelling fell flat. It is the perfect summer read because summer isn't over yet!!!
