View of the valley on the hike to Fish Creek Falls.

Steamboat Springs has grown immensely popular in the last twenty years as a tourist town for the outdoorsy adventurers. The summer it hosts bikers, hikers, and watersports. The winter snows bring the skiers and snowboarders out to play. Steamboat Springs is home to 88 Olympians and counting, so you’re guaranteed winter sports galore.

If you don’t want to read all of my posts about Steamboat Springs, Colorado, (although, you should; I’m a great writer writing about great places) here’s a quick look at all of the places you need to go! I’m linking all my posts, so feel free to click and read on.

OUTDOORS
Mount Werner
Mount Werner is the mountain in Steamboat. In the summer it is a hub of bikers and hikers. In the winter, strap on your skis or snowboard and head up the mountain. You can ride the gondola up, but I highly suggest embracing your adventurer and hiking up the mountain. It’s beautiful. If you can, the peak is where the best views in town can be seen.
Fish Creek Falls
Fish Creek Falls has become an iconic destination. It’s $5 to park, and then off you go! There are several trails of varying difficulty. There are two different falls. The first is less than half a mile down hill from the parking lot. It is absolutely gorgeous. Between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, it is pretty busy. It clears out after 6:00. If you’re up for a long and sometimes tricky hike uphill, there’s a pretty bridge over the water. Further up, you’ll find the second falls, which are amazing. Few people venture this far. Passed that is Long Lake. It is definitely worth a trip to any of the sites and trails.
Tubing
Due to weather conditions, I wasn’t able to go tubing. The river conditions were not suitable the entire time I was there, unfortunately. There are several shops along the Yampa River in downtown Steamboat. The price is $20 for tube rentals and includes a shuttle ride back to the shop at the end of your trip.
Alpine Slide
I have done this in the past, and it is so much fun! I wasn’t able to do it during my last trip because of construction. It’s closed this summer, but next summer have at it. It’s like a summertime luge on wheels. Not the cheapest activity, but you could spend way more on other things. It starts at $12, but the more rides you buy the better the deal.

SHOPPING
Downtown Steamboat is as close to idyllic as I have ever seen. When people think of Colorado, this is what comes to mind. A cozy downtown filled with lots of little shops of all shapes and sizes nestled into the valley of mountains. No matter where you look, you’ll find mountains as far as the eye can see.
Ruby Jane Boutique
Ruby Jane is a cute store filled with clothes, jewelry, accessories, and more. I bought a purse I have been using constantly. Instagram @rubyjane.valleygirlboutique
Fringe Boutique
The exterior is blue with white trim. I would have gone broke buying everything I loved in this store. I got a few presents for friends, necklaces, and quippy cards. Instagram @fringeboutiquesteamboat

Off the Beaten Path
This bookstore is adorable. I love that there menu items are named after famous books and iconic characters. They have a great section. I settled in to get some work done a few times on vacation. Instagram @steamboat_books

FOOD
Bésame
I fell in love with this new restaurant. It is an unexpected flavor bomb in the middle of Americana. Latin food in small town Colorado. It’s pretty amazing! Instagram @besamesteamboat
Lyon’s Corner Drug & Soda Fountain
I have loved this place my whole life. A traditional drug store with a traditional soda fountain. Grab an ice cream and a phosphate. Heaven!
The Shack
It’s an institution in my family. Open in the morning to mid-afternoon, it’s a diner with a lodge flare. Once on the outside patio when I was young, there was a tiny bat napping, and it was the highlight of that trip.
Salt + Lime
Great Mexican food and a fun, modern decor. I love the rooftop seating with views of downtown and mountains. The tacos are amazing, and they have a mocktail menu! Instagram @saltandlimesteamboat

Off the Beaten Path

I love independent bookstores. I try to shop at and support them as much as I possibly can. When I travel to new places, I’m trying to visit as many local bookstores as I can. I think they’re a unique look into the towns they inhabit. Off the Beaten Path is Steamboat Springs’ local bookshop, which has been open since 1990. I have been stopping in every time I’m in town my whole life.

Walking into Off the Beaten Path is a fun experience. There are huge windows letting tons of natural light into the store, which would be very dark otherwise due to the wood. There is nature inspired art everywhere. Large multi-colored leaves hang from the ceiling. A New Release room is at the front of the store with other sections scattered throughout the store. An upstairs area has new and used books with extra seating for reading, working, or people watching. They have cute items too. I almost bought a fox shaped mug. I did buy a small bag with the words goal digger written on the front.

They have a beautiful selection of books ranging from best sellers, to indie, to children’s, and more. I always love seeing what local bookstores choose to include in their inventory, and Off the Beaten Path does not disappoint. I could have bought more than I did, but I have a huge stack waiting for me at home.

I have several books I absolutely adore. I love finding different editions. Off the Beaten Path had some hard to find versions of the classics. I caved and bought a leather bound edition of Edith Wharton’s Age of Innocence because it’s one of my favorites.

In the middle of the store, there is seating around a full cafe supplying baked goods and quirky drink options. They have great Seven Layer Bars. Their coffees are named after famous books and iconic characters. I tried several, and they were all yummy. The baristas were really lovely and competent. They do serve alcoholic beverages, but I’m sober.

I have a hard time working places outside my own home environment. I was so comfortable in Off the Beaten Path I was actually able to sit down and get work done not once but twice.

Bookstores, Houston, On the Town

Kaboom Books

Kaboom Books is an independently owned, used book store in Houston, Texas. This place is heaven. I’m not even joking. I found Kaboom almost a year ago. I don’t make it in as much as I would like… Probably because I would be broke if I frequented their establishment.Screenshot_20180521-172830_Gallery.jpgKaboom is located in the Woodland Heights area of Houston – very close to downtown. It is so beautiful surrounded by cute houses and a few neighboring stores. When you pull up, the entrance is between two large picture windows. The store takes up three more store fronts because who can have enough books? When you enter through the front door, you’re immediately greeted with that familiar book smell and wood from the countless shelves. The big windows let in tons of natural light and are home to a few bright green plants. Right inside the door is a counter and a chair usually occupied by one of the owners and sometimes the store cat.Screenshot_20180521-172853_Gallery.jpgThe first space you’re in is a nonfiction area. The next area holds a lot of their fiction, children’s books, and more. The third space is smaller and holds more nonfiction. The shelves line the walls and create mazes within the middle of the rooms. There is no wasted space here. They have filled it to capacity with books. Around 100,000 books! Holy wow. With 76 different sections ranging from fiction to art to science to poetry to a whole lot more you can find popular contemporary books to books out of print. There are comfy reading chairs and sofas calling you to have a seat, look at the books in your pile, and enjoy the beauty of this bookstore. If it weren’t so warm and cozy, the amount of books would be immense and intimidating. The bookshelves are tall, so there are ladders scattered throughout to help you reach the books even I can’t reach easily. Behind the store is a lovely seating area. They use this area to host events. I haven’t been able to make it to one… yet! One of these days, I will.

The owners of Kaboom are a lovely married couple. I have been able to chat with them on a few occasions, and they are the sweetest and so knowledgeable. They originally owned bookstores in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Eight years ago, they moved to Houston and opened Kaboom.

Other than the absolute Instagram worthy bookshelves, they have so many great books. It’s hard finding books in French, but they have a great selection, which I very much appreciate.

If you’re in the Houston area or will be, you should stop by. Truly!!! You will definitely not regret it. For as huge as Houston is, there is a severe lack of independent bookstores. I am a firm believer in supporting small businesses, and this is one of my favorite to support. Even after eight years, it still feels like a hidden gem.

The Last Bookstore

I happened upon The Last Bookstore in downtown LA by accident, truly. I was on my way to a dinner reservation (see Los Angeles – Eating) when the strap on my high heel broke… Ugh! So I had to hobble to a Walgreens for some super glue to save the day, which it did. As I was speed walking through downtown LA to make my reservation, I walked by The Last Bookstore. Speed peeping through the window, I made a mental note to return after dinner. I did. It was worth it.

I vowed I would only spend $20 because I don’t need more books… Who am I kidding? Of course I NEED more books. I spent a bit more than $20 a few times more. I’m proud of myself; I could have spent so much more. This bookstore was amazing. Seriously.

Screenshot_20180530-173527_Photos.jpg

You walk into the bookstore, and it’s marvelous. They sell both new and used books. The used books are in all but perfect condition, and at such a low price you would be stupid to buy new. Feel free to buy new, though! I was in heaven. There is the ground floor which has contemporary fiction and classical fiction and self help and cooking and rare books and biographies and more. There are hug columns, which are gorgeous. When you walk up the stairs, on each stair it says what genre awaits on the second floor. On the second floor there are art exhibits and art vendors. There is a tunnel made from books and a cute circle acting as a window to books yonder. You can find sci-fi books, mystery, foreign language, history, philosophy, psychology, you name it, you can find it. My favorite part was when I happened upon several shelves dedicated to decorative books in every array of color because, I guess, some people don’t actually read books?

Screenshot_20180530-173446_Photos.jpg

Suffice to say, I could have stayed in the bookstore forever. I let my close friends know if I am ever lost they can find me here. No, in fact, I was not kidnapped; I just ran away to The Last Bookstore in LA. So if you don’t hear from me, I’ll be there!

I’m considering moving to LA just to be in close proximity to this bookstore… So if there’s anyone out there who wants to employ me for, you know, a living wage in LA, hit me up!!!
