2019! Off We Go

Here is a series of Beau pictures. They’re all perfect and very much us.
Enjoy Beau’s stream of consciousness.

No. Thank you. Stop. I don’t like it.
20190102_152813-02.jpeg
Oh! Treats. I’ll sniff.

I said, “I. Don’t. Like.”
20190102_152642(0)-03.jpeg
I don’t like the rain. I don’t like the hat. The treats are hardly worth this.

Anytime now. We can take the picture.
20190102_152635-02.jpeg
Food?
20190102_152552-02.jpeg
This is not worth it.

Is this a good enough pose? I look stupid. Is my expression conveying that?

Why did the dog cross the road? To get away from you.
20190102_152620-02.jpeg
Won’t you leave me along, devil woman?!?
20190102_152410-02.jpeg
You. This. Is. Exhausting.

I am being followed.

There. We look good. Here’s my sweater | My hat/leg warmers | Mom’s hat | Mom’s Sweater | Mom’s scarf | Mom’s jeans | Mom’s boots | I’m done.

Beau and I wish you a Happy New Year!!! I can’t believe it’s 2019 already. Holy wowza!

We spent our New Year’s Eve with family in the Chicago area. A very low key night surrounded by the people we love most. My 63 pound dog was miniaturized by her 170-ish pound Great Dane cousin, Dexter. They snuggled on the couch along with a tiny, old girl, Ana, and three cats. It’s a big couch, but four people, three dogs (totalling 200+ pounds), and three cats is cozy. We celebrated with food and an Avengers movie marathon. We know how to party hard.

We said our goodbyes to family and friends in Chicago yesterday. My grandparents live directly on the way from Chicago to Texas, so we stopped in for lunch. Then, we were convinced to stay for a few days. Working from home, I can do this.

I visit my grandparents in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas often. I haven’t been since the end of May. One of the first things Grammy said when I walked in the door, “I was wondering what happened! You’ve been gone sooooo long.” For awhile, I was here almost every month. After the I love you and I missed you’s were exchanged. “You’re staying the night.” Then my grandpa, aka Poppy Walt, wanted to take us out to dinner. And Grammy said, “No, they’re staying a few days. She has nowhere to be.” I guess I’m staying for a few days. Not that I or Beau are complaining. They live in a gated golfing community, and their backyard overlooks a fairway, a lake, and some mountains. REAL shit hole, I tell you.

Since we drove over night, Beau was cozy in her backseat blanket cuddle puddle for nine and a half hours. When we arrived, she was so happy; she loves it here. There is so much space to run around in their woodsy backyard, and the big house has lots of sniffs to find. The rain dampened her high spirits, but life isn’t perfect.

I couldn’t resist taking these cute pictures. I found her sweater, hat, and leg warmers at Target. She HATES the hat. I won’t lie: she is not a fan. At least, she hasn’t transferred her hat hatred to me as the hat-putter-onner. She really likes the sweater though. It’s warm and snug. The leg warmers helped her bear the rain, surprisingly. I’m still in a festive holiday mood, so I donned one of my go-to red sweaters, my favorite red scarf (budget version here), and a white hat. I also live in my grey Aldo boots, and these jeans. Seriously, these boots are the best. For otk boots, these are an incredible deal! Beau is for sure the cuter of the two. Although, she got her beauty sleep… I drove through the night.

Not a bad start to 2019. Rang in the New Year together in Chicago. Day 2 and 3 will be in Arkansas. Day 4 will be home to Houston. Ruff life. We’ll see where else 2019 takes us on our travels!!!

Superior Bathhouse Brewery

Superior Bathhouse Brewery in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas is a must. I go every time I am in town. I have introduced several friends and even family to this lovely place.

20180526_170535.jpg
Just an 18 beer flight.

Hot Springs, Arkansas is known for their hot springs. Wow! Shocker, I know. Beautiful bathhouses sprung up in downtown for the rich and famous way-back-when. They fell into disrepair for many years. Many have been refurbished because they’re historic, and it would be a tragedy to see the architecture go to waste. There are two which have remained functional bathhouses. One is a store. One is a museum. Another was turned into a BREWERY!

Beau was trying to get in on my root beer.

I am not a drinker anymore, but all my friends and family are. They do have a killer root beer, which I imbibe with much gusto. I am super picky about root beer, so this is a glowing and hard earned recommendation. They have eighteen beers on tap. Some they make themselves; others they bring in. The floor is white hexagon tile with black grout, trés retro. There are tables, a hightop, seats along the huge window front, and picnic benches out front – hello dog friendly! The servers are always lovely and knowledgeable about the beers on tap. It’s a great place to sit and enjoy a drink after or before a day of shopping or spas or just to people watch.

20180526_170616.jpg
My family got a flight of all 18 beers on tap.

The building they inhabit is Superior Bathhouse, so the name stays true to its roots. It stood vacant for thirty-ish years before Rose Schweikhart moved to Hot Springs in 2011 to open a brewery. It’s the first of its kind in several ways. It is the first and only brewery housed in a U.S. National Park. It took Schweikhart two years to negotiate a lease agreement with the federal government, but she did it! The city is famous for their 144° spring water, which is used at the brewery to brew beer. They are the only brewery in the world to use thermal spring water for brewing. Woah. They opened their doors in 2013 and continually make new and unusual beers to satisfy pallets of all inclination. Seriously. They’re cool. Not only are they are brewery, they are also a full service restaurant and event space. The food is pretty awesome too.

Even Beau loves it!

I love going. I don’t think I have been to Hot Springs without stopping in for a root beer since I discovered it in 2014. I’m a touch obsessed. If you ever stop in and post to Instagram, make sure to use #hotspringsontap.

Bathhouse Soapery

Last post from my trip to Arkansas last month. It’s also a really short one! Mostly fueled by my love for being sudsy and smelling nice.

Talking about one of my favorite… What goes better together than books and a bubble bath? Not much.

I found Bathhouse Soapery a couple years ago when I was wandering around downtown Hot Springs. The store is just the cutest! I am absolutely in love with their soaps and scrubs and bath bombs and everything in between. Every time I visit my grandparents, I stop and stock up. So many varieties. So many colors. So many opportunities for relaxation.

I really don’t know much about their store, but they have three locations: Hot Springs, Natchitoches, St. Charles, and you can shop online! I swear by them. The staff is always really nice and knowledgeable. Ready with suggestions if you want to combine scents, which you can do with their scrubs. One of my favorite things of theirs. They have everything you could possibly need and want. It’s not just for the ladies either; there are a lot of masculine scents too. Although, I’m more drawn to those than the flowers. My guy friends enjoy the soaps as much as my lady friends.

Leaving the Book Behind – Lake Ouachita

In the Bookstagram community, we tend to focus on books so much. I’m always seeing people apologize for not posting or being absent or what-not. It’s important that we acknowledge our hugely vibrant lives outside of the screens, which I will be doing a lot more of from now on… So here’s a slice of mine:

I have a best friend with whom I have a long history. He has been my person for damn near a decade. So I’ll round. Due to circumstance, he had never been able to meet my grandparents, who I am incredibly close to. FINALLY, he did. He took leave – he’s a Marine – and we roadtripped to their house in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Suffice to say, they got along splendidly.

20180417_142711.jpg

I have spent a great deal of time visiting my grandparents, so I had a great deal of things and places I wanted to show him. It was like taking him home for the very first time; except better because no parents.

Lake Ouachita is only about twenty minutes from their house. It’s a huge lake with incredible outdoor activities. We went with the intention of kayaking and taking some really beautiful book pictures. But… that didn’t happen. It was too windy, and they wouldn’t let us rent kayaks because we’d get lost on the water or something like that. I was sad. Honestly, it was for the best because I completely lack upper body strength, and would have for sure been lost at lake.

20180417_143013.jpg

Since kayaking had been the plan, I dressed accordingly: swimsuit, maxi skirt, and flip flops. Ideal kayaking outfit for cute pictures…. What it’s not ideal for? Hiking.

We walked back to the car. I was sad. Not wanting to waste the trip, we looked at each other and went “walk?” To fill you in. Lake Ouachita is not a podunk lake. It is ginormous. It is located in the Ozarks, so by walk I really mean mountainous hike. While at the car, I had a debate mostly with myself about “should I leave the book in the car?” I went back and forth. Here’s the thing. I love blogging, but it is not just a hobby anymore. I HAVE to create content because it’s becoming a job, which I love. Sometimes, I don’t want to work. After chatting it out with Alex – but mostly myself – I decided to leave the book in the car and enjoy the time I get with my best friend in a beautiful place. I went one further. I left my phone in the car!!! *GASP* (How did the pictures here come to be? Alex brought his phone.)

It was a good thing I left my book and phone in the car because I would have inevitably tripped and fallen all over myself because hiking through a rocky forest with stuff in my hands while wearing flip flops as the clumsy person I am is a bad idea. Very bad idea.

Lake Ouachita is absolutely gorgeous. If you ever a chance to go, you should. Try the kayaking because it’s fun, and you’ll definitely get a work out. We ended up walking almost five miles. I’m glad I wore a swimsuit that gave me good tan lines.

The trail we took was winding. They had recently done a controlled burn to encourage future growth. There was a good amount of breeze as the leaves rustled and the waves rolled in constantly. We were never far from the lake’s shoreline. There were places with sandy shores, forest meets water, and rocks. I love it there. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. It’s an excellent place to get away because you won’t have any cell reception!

20180417_143521.jpg

It’s important to enjoy life in the moment and not through a lense. I could have taken some really amazing book photos. Instead, I had an amazing day. I rarely get to see my best friend. He lives on the other side of the country and is at the mercy of the Marines. Our time is very limited. It’s important to recognize moments beautiful moments, so they are not wasted.

Week in Hot Springs Village

I’m getting around to this post so late!!! I’ve been busy with life. There’s no other excuse.

I ended up going to Hot Springs Village because of Hurricane Harvey hitting Houston hard. I like to call this time my hurrication. Luckily, my grandparents live six and half hours away in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. I planned on being there for three days. Unfortunately, I ended up staying nine days. Oh well! I had lots to keep me busy, and many books were read while I was away.

Hot Springs Village is a gated golfing community twenty minutes outside of Hot Springs. It’s a beautiful area. My grandparents moved there from New Orleans when I was fifteen. They’re always surprised I love visiting them. It’s a golfing community, and I hate golfing. The residents are mostly retired, so no distracting activities for a young person. The entire time I’m there, I entertain myself by walking in the mountains and reading. So mostly reading because I’m not a huge fan of exercise. It’s really a reader’s paradise. So much outdoor space and very few people make for a fabulous back drop for a reading marathon.

If you get bored of reading inside or around the village, you can always wander your way into Hot Springs, which is full of fun things to do.

Hot Springs is a tourist town with lots of national parks to adventure through. Hot Springs is a city with quite the history. It was first explored in 1673. The land was a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Prudhomme became the first settler of what would become Hot Springs in 1807. In 1818, the United States gained the land from the Quapaw tribe; you can find many businesses and landmarks named after the Quapaws including a Bathhouse. Hot Springs was a renowned destination for bathers drawn to the healing thermal waters bubbling up from the underground springs. An area of downtown Hot Springs became known as Bathhouse Row for their beautiful spas. During the Civil War, there was a decline in bathers coming to the springs, and many citizens of the city fled as troops neared Little Rock. Post-Civil War era saw a surge in population as the city rebuilt and expanded. In the early 20th century, Hot Springs was attractive to the rich and famous, as well as, the rich and infamous. It became a hotbed for gangsters and illegal gambling.

Screenshot_20180530-131849_Photos.jpg

Hot Springs is now a tourist destination attracting those who want a piece of Americana and to experience the lovely spas fed by the hot springs. The architecture in historic Hot Springs is absolutely gorgeous. Only a few bathhouses are still functional, but many still stand and house museums, shops, and even a brewery. I have experienced the spas at the Quapaw Bathhouse, and they are gorgeous! The floor in the basement is warm because of the heat radiating from the springs, which run underneath the ground.

I love shopping in the historic district. I can’t go to Hot Springs without frequenting the Bathhouse Soapery. Though they ship and have other stores, they are headquartered in Hot Springs. There shop is beautiful, light, and smells like heaven. Their products are the only ones I use! There’s a great candy store next door called Pour Some Sugar on Me Sweet Shoppe. It was definitely difficult for me to leave without handing them my wallet because of my addiction to sweets! There’s a great place called The Pancake House. It’s only open until 12:45 pm, so get there early. I highly recommend the sausage; it’s homemade. There are gorgeous fountains throughout the historic district fed by the springs; you can see steam rising off the water. The historic Arlington Hotel is a must see. It’s huge and you can’t miss it!

If you’ve had enough of the historic district, there is more than enough to do for the outdoorsy folks. Hot Springs is surrounded by the Ouachita Mountains. Everywhere you look you’ll find gorgeous views of the mountains and forests. Lake Ouachita is amazing for those who enjoy the water! It’s huge, and you could spend days exploring it. It’s great for those who want a break from technology. There is no reception in that area… At least, for me anyways. If you’re into kayaking, this is an amazing destination. There is also Hot Springs National Park, which is awe inspiring.

Arkansas may not be at the top of everyone’s must see list, but Hot Springs is a beautiful place to visit, relax, and read. It has good food, good views, and enough history and activities to keep everyone happy. If you’re every in the area, let me know! I’m happy to lend a suggestion or twelve.
